Not Shocked, Not Awed
As for Elon Musk, we wish we could say "we did Nazi that coming."
It’s windy again in my neck of the Los Angeles area. I spent most of yesterday actively tuning out what was going on in Washington. I set the TV on the Hallmark Channel so I could putter around the house while in the background, big town girls found romance with small town boys. I worked out. I messed around in the kitchen.
I avoided my email and my social media until late afternoon, and even then I decided to be selective about what I chose to engage with. No clickbait-y Daily Beast articles for me. I’ve decided that this time around, I am going to save my outrage for the MOST outrageous things.
But just as my self-care is going to be different from yours, we all keep different personal atrocity scales. When I did peek at my Bluesky account, one event seemed to hit just about everyone’s mark - and it wasn’t something 47 did. This particular affront was performed by his little billionaire boss.
My colleague, Aliza Worthington, has something to say about that.
Failure All Around
Well, I hope we’re all adjusting to life under the Orange Overlord and his Fascist Fuckbuddy. That’s right, kids, Musk started the administration off right with not one, but two! energetic Nazi salutes. To make the move even more Goebbels-y, two venerable Jewish organizations are gaslighting us by trying to convince us Musk was just being “energetic” and “awkward” due to his spectrum-y stuff. Awwww. They sure acknowledge autism when it suits them, amirite?
Here's what the ADL had to say:
This is a delicate moment. It’s a new day and yet so many are on edge. Our politics are inflamed, and social media only adds to the anxiety.
It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge.
In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath. This is a new beginning. Let’s hope for healing and work toward unity in the months and years ahead.
(Sorry about that link to ex-Twitter. It seems ADL’s Facebook, Threads, and Instagram accounts don’t have that helpful explanation! Hmmmm…)
Then over at The Forward, they were a bit more — shall we say — connected to reality. But just a bit.
“We don’t really think that was a Sieg Heil, even though every single context surrounding it, including the history of the person doing it and the words he said before it, and his entire lifetime of association with neo-nazis, and of course, the visual we see with our own eyes of his actual arm making the gesture, it’s free speech, so everyone just calm down.”
How on god’s green earth have the Jews as a people survived for 4,000 years? These institutions sure seem dead set on delivering us straight into the cattle cars. I need to connect with the 79% of Jewish people who didn’t vote for this shit. How are we going to tikkun olam when the olam is dead set on making us go bye-bye? In other words, how are we supposed to make the nation safe for marginalized people, like Black people, trans people, LGBQT+ people, poor people, brown people, refugees, when on Day One even the ADL and the Forward are complicit in licking the boots of Nazis?
Yeah, so far, not adjusting too well over here.
What We’re Reading Right Now
One item that did break through my news blackout yesterday was the sad news that Cecile Richards passed away after her fight with brain cancer. In her honor, Joyce White Vance republished an interview from earlier this year. Richards never gave up the fight, and neither shall we.
Imagine time traveling back to 2009 and telling past you what we are facing in 2025.
Jennifer Rubin: Do not accept MAGA’s words for what they are doing. We need to reframe and rename our political vocabulary.
“So, it is Day One to take back our country from those who want to destroy it for the benefit of their autocratic allies abroad. Regardless of your political party, and whether you have voted or not in your lifetime, if you care about the future of democracy and rights in America you can be part of this effort.”
