Kristi Noem Should Be Impeached
And more thoughts about what's transpiring this week in Los Angeles
As we recorded last week’s podcast, Aliza and I lamented that there was simply TOO MUCH STUFF happening to be able to hone in and analyze any of it.
This week has been the opposite - at least, for me. I have lived most of my life in Los Angeles. Karoli and I both have witnessed riots and LA burning. And this is not that.
This is a crisis entirely created by the Trump regime. And their determination to conquer a proud city of immigrants is not “authoritarian slide” - it is full-blown fascism.
I’ve been angry all week. And after I viewed the footage of Kristi Noem’s goons cuffing my Senator and violently ejecting him from a press conference, I was LIVID.
“[What happened today] warrants impeachment proceedings on the floor tomorrow,” Karoli says. “Make the Republicans vote on this. Let’s not pussyfoot around with this stuff anymore. They’re going to do this, fine. Then, BOOM. She’s - as far as I’m concerned, she should be impeached and be done. And the Senate should hold up all the business in the Senate. Until this is resolved in an acceptable manner.”
Los Angeles was the focus of our podcast today, as well as the antidote to all the fascism surrounding us: the 1800+ No Kings Day rallies around the nation on June 14.
Los Angeles is Peaceful - Really
The current ICE rampage through Southern California has been happening for at least a couple of weeks. They began aggressively targeting Home Depots and other Los Angeles businesses last Friday - and the community (understandably!) responded by protesting the actions.
This is not unusual. There are demonstrations and other events in DTLA every week - and have been for years. Most are peaceful. Some garner a large police response. Sometimes there are folks who seem more interested in causing mayhem than peaceful protests. Sometimes, this is a reaction to a win by one of our professional sports teams.
But if you’ve never visited Los Angeles, it’s hard to understand exactly how large this city is. The city itself spans over 500 square miles. The couple of downtown blocks that have been the scene of the current protests take up maybe one of those square miles.
No matter how many times you view that footage of a burning Waymo (from Sunday), Los Angeles is NOT on fire. We are concerned about the militarization of the city, but have been quietly living our lives, as writer Robert Hubbell documented earlier this week.
